Curriculum

The purpose of “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” Character Education Curriculum is to establish moral and ethical principles to guide student development and achievement that are significant and important. Each module includes lessons and activities based
around the popular video animation of “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids”. The modules creatively incorporate a variety of teaching/learning concepts, strategies, and practices.

It is the intent of each module to address moral principles around a specific theme (i.e. honesty, respect, responsibility, etc.). We hope that by viewing the “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” videos and by working together and to sharing their experiences
students will recognize and accept the precepts of moral and ethical behavior.

When implementing these modules, we ask that teachers will construct a learning environment that promotes honesty, trust, and respectful behavior. By establishing such an environment we hope that students will critically analyze the video themes to determine for themselves the effect and consequences of inappropriate behavior. Subsequently, this will result in the appreciation and application of positive values and ethical conduct.

Modules

  1. Each module is composed of a minimum of 5 activities. Each module revolves around a specific moral theme or attitude based on selected episodes of the “Fat Albert and Cosby Kids” DVDs. The DVD’s have been designed for easy use by teachers and other educators to teach each lesson or activity. For example, Reading, Ritin, and Rudy emphasizes the importance of school. Most modules are interdisciplinary. Whenever possible, there is a connection with mathematics, language arts, and social issues that effect today’ students. Modules include whole class activities, team activities, and individual activities
  2. At the end of the lessons there is a list of suggested books for various age and ability levels. The reference section also lists appropriate web sites that can be accessed for additional information and activities. The Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids DVDs can be used as a teaching tool to create and continuously encourage a culture of moral values in schools and communities. Teaching virtues such as respect and responsibility will assist youth in solving conflicts in a mature and responsible way. From 1972 to 1984, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids themes had a great influence and impact on its audience. The theme in each episode reflects the concept: Learn to live with who you are.

Specific lessons are developed around numerous themes from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. Students will observe firsthand the application of moral values in our nation’s schools. Activities will be developed from the DVDs and songs from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids – the original animated series. The activities will help teachers and facilitators understand and access strengths buried beneath behavioral problems of children. The engaging activities will help to combat the crisis youth face
regarding violence and the breakdown of ethical and moral values. They will also assist youth in becoming more successful academically.

Through the use of these DVDs and songs, each student will learn critical information on the specific steps toward reducing anger and sadness, which will help to eliminate bullying and conflict. The use of the Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids DVDs will equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to effectively and peaceably handle conflict.

The goal of creating activities linked to the content in the DVDs is to help students to learn to live with who they are, to be respectful of others, and to accept to learn moral values that will assist them in making the right choices. Additionally, the DVDs will foster in students the skills to manage interpersonal conflict and will give them practical methods for diffusing conflicts before they escalate into violence. Students are encouraged to participate in carefully structured activities that emphasize moral values. In addition to specific questions related to each video, students will have opportunities to respond to case/scenarios studies by proposing, analyzing, and refining solutions to specific problems.

Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Leaders’ Club
The purpose of the Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids Leadership Club is to encourage students to recognize and achieve moral values and to become responsible members of the local and global community.
